40 unrestored.jpg (43461 bytes) This is what we started with. This tractor was, as you can see, pretty rough. It started life as a tri-cycle front end. The original owner traded it back to the dealer on the new M-F 50's. The gentleman we bought it from, bought it from the dealer with the understanding that they would replace the front end with a wide front and paint it. Of course, they painted it Massey-Ferguson Red and put on "50" decals. It spent the following years as a "50" imposter.
We started out with a bang. Most of the disassembly was done in a day. Little did dad and I think it would be almost two years before we would finish this project. 40jim.jpg (46668 bytes)

Most of the work was done by dad on this one.
My only contribution was painting. After viewing the finished product some of you may wonder how much of a "contribution" it really was.  :-)

40frnt.jpg (16713 bytes) In what is now becoming a familiar story, we finished this project with weeks to go before our local tractor show.
We started out with a 20, 30, 35 and 40.
Dad and I will start work on the 35 this winter.
This would mean that we would have one restored tractor to represent each type of U.S. made Ferguson. The problem is we have since bought two more 20's and a low 40. As dad suggested, "might as well go for one of each year."

Did you know that the F-40 was made only two years and that fewer than 10,000 were produced?
